The text "??? photon" is a placeholder in Synthesis indicating that the item being crafted can be of a varying element, depending on the photon you put in.

The following photons can be used in the Synthesis of Line Shields and Striking weapons:

• Photon will create a Neutral item.
• Ban-photon will create a Fire item.
• Ray-photon will create an Ice item.
• Zon-photon will create a Lightning item.
• Di-photon will create a Ground item.
• Gra-photon will create a Light item.
• Megi-photon will create a Dark item.

Two other neutral element photons exist. Im-photons are used for Ranged weapon Synthesis, while El-photons are used for TECHNIC weapon synthesis.
These two photons cannot be used in the Synthesis of Line Shields or Striking weapons.
