For fire & ice armors:
While holding X or Y, press the usual button to change armor without holding LT. For example, Hold X to do the hold tech, and while you continue to hold X, press the View/Back Button to equip fire armor.

For the other 4 elemental armors that are normally on the face buttons (X, Y, A, B), use these buttons instead:
Lightning = Guide Button
Earth = Left Stick Click
Light = Right Stick Click
Dark = d-pad Left

*Note* If you are using a turbo or autofire profile, this will not work for those buttons.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/who Server Command = Left Stick Click while holding LT
/reload Server Command = Left Stick Click while holding LT + RT

*Note* The following buttons are proper chat shortcuts. Depending on how many times you press the button, you can do multiple different versions. For example, hold RB and press the View/Back Button once to say "Thank You". Hold RB and press the View/Back Button twice quickly to say "Congrats". You can edit these to say whatever you want.

Controller Profiles (To change profiles, use the controller commands listed below or right click on the JoyToKey desktop icon and select them from the list. When you change profiles, an image will be displayed in the bottom right corner letting you know which one is active.):

Standard = Guide Button while holding A + B
Turbo X = X while holding A + B
Turbo Y = Y while holding A + B
Turbo XY = Menu/Start Button while holding A + B

*Note* The following 4 profiles are ideal for AFK photon art leveling.
Autofire XY = View/Back Button while holding A + B (Press X or Y to toggle Autofire ON / OFF for that button.)
Autofire X & RB+X = Right Stick Up while holding A + B (Press X to toggle Autofire ON / OFF for the main attack on both your left and right handed weapons.)
Autofire X & RB+X Front = Right Stick Left while holding A + B (Same as above, but also walking into a corner. Set the in-game option for Lock-On to Click, and activate lock-on, then press X. You will automatically use the main attack on both your left and right handed weapons, while constantly positioning yourself into the corner in front of you.)
Autofire X & RB+X Back = Right Stick Right while holding A + B (Same as above, but with your back to the corner.)

Slot Machine = Right Stick Down while holding A + B

Slot Machine Profile Controls:
Insert Coin = A (Hold for delayed turbo)
Slot Machine Lever Pull = X (or Right Stick Down while holding RT)
All-in-one Slot Machine Button = Y (Hold Y until all coins have been inserted, then release Y for lever pull.)

If you want to use these controls for yourself, follow these steps:

Step 1: Run PSU. Enter these for your 12 chat shortcuts:

F1 /sl fire
F2 /sl ice
F3 /sl lightning
F4 /sl earth
F5 /sl light
F6 /sl dark
F7 /wp1
F8 /wp2
F9 /wp3
F10 /wp4
F11 /wp5
F12 /wp6

Step 2: From the in-game options, change the Function Key Setting to Chat Shortcut. This option makes it so pressing the function keys on their own activates your chat shortcuts, and Shift + function keys will open the menus. Also make sure the Controller setting is on Keyboard. The Weapon/TECHNIC swap setting should be on Hold as well.

Close PSU for now.

Step 3: Plug in your Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller to your PC and it should automatically install the official drivers. If you are using Windows 10, follow the instructions below to enable your Xbox Guide button. If not, you can skip to Step 4.

5qb3tNX.png
Open the Windows Start menu and go to Settings.

00uJYOn.png
Click on Gaming.

JXqn6yG.png
Make sure this Game Bar option is unchecked.

Step 4: Open Run on Windows, and enter the following to access the hidden ini file:

%localappdata%\SEGA\PHANTASY STAR UNIVERSE Illuminus

Make a backup of the ini file before making any changes if you want.

Find the [gamepad1] section and overwrite it with the following:

[gamepad1]
BUTTON_A=0
BUTTON_B=0
BUTTON_X=0
BUTTON_Y=0
BUTTON_L1=5
BUTTON_R1=6
BUTTON_L2=0
BUTTON_R2=0
BUTTON_L3=0
BUTTON_R3=0
BUTTON_SELECT=0
BUTTON_START=0
BUTTON_U=0
BUTTON_R=0
BUTTON_D=0
BUTTON_L=0
BUTTON_NOT_USE_1=0
BUTTON_NOT_USE_2=0
BUTTON_NOT_USE_3=0
BUTTON_NOT_USE_4=0
STICK2_INPUT_X=4
STICK2_INPUT_Y=5

Find the [keyboard] section and overwrite it with the following:

[keyboard]
WND_MM_SC1=F1
WND_MM_OPEN=
PL_MOVE_F=W
PL_MOVE_B=S
PL_MOVE_L=A
PL_MOVE_R=X
PL_ATK_A=HOME
PL_ATK_B=END
PL_PALETTE0=F
WND_AP_CP=E
PL_CAM_BACK=G
PL_SBJ=Q
WND_CONVERT=SPACE
PL_VEHICLE_ACC=C
WND_MM_SC2=F2
WND_MM_SC3=F3
WND_MM_SC4=F4
WND_MM_SC5=F5
WND_MM_SC6=F6
WND_MM_SC7=F7
WND_CS_UP=I
WND_CS_DOWN=K
WND_CS_DECIDE=L
WND_CS_CANCEL=J
SND_MOVE_U=UP
SND_MOVE_D=DOWN
SND_MOVE_L=LEFT
SND_MOVE_R=RIGHT
WND_SORT=M
ML_ANS=Z

Save and close the ini file, giving admin permission if needed.

Step 5: Download this zip file, containing both the JoyToKey and AutoHotkey programs themselves, along with the options, profiles and script files from either of these locations. JoyToKey does most of the controls. AutoHotKey is there to let us add additional chat shortcuts beyond the game's normal limit of 12.:
Media Fire

Send Space

Step 6: Extract the zip file, put the folder called JoyToKey_en in your programs folder. Make a desktop shortcut for JoyToKey.exe, right click on it, select Properties, go to Compatibility tab and set it to run as administrator.

Step 7: Run the AutoHotkey setup file to install the program, and choose Unicode 64-bit or 32-bit. Put the folder called Scripts in your AutoHotkey program folder. Open the Scripts folder and make a desktop shortcut for PSU.ahk. Run the PSU.ahk desktop shortcut with AutoHotkeyU64.exe or AutoHotkeyU32.exe.

Step 8: Everything is all set up and ready to go now. Each time before you open PSU, make sure your controller is connected, and run the JoyToKey and PSU.ahk desktop shortcuts. As long as JoyToKey has the correct profile selected, and PSU is the active window, the controls should work.

Depending on the class you play, you might want to use a profile that makes one or both of the attack buttons turbo when held down. For example, Gunmaster could use Turbo X for their bullets, Fighmaster could use Turbo Y to help with Tornado Dance travel, and Fighgunner could use Turbo XY for both. These are delayed turbo, so they won't clash when you want to do single button presses. To change JoyToKey profiles, use a button combination or right click on the taskbar icon. An image will be displayed in the bottom right corner to let you know you changed profiles.

Extra Step: If you want to edit the chat shortcuts (Hello, Thank you, etc), right click on the PSU.ahk file on the desktop and open it with Notepad. Find the ones you want to change and then just simply edit the text to whatever you want. If you want to change the text color or use exclamation marks, you have to put curly brackets around them. For example, if you want to say Hello!, you would type it like this: {{}red{}}Hello{!}. After you changed the text how you like, save and close the file.

OK. I think that's everything. I know this can seem really complicated and crazy so hopefully I did a good job with this guide. If a download URL no longer works, post here and I'll update it. Enjoy.

Is there a way to invert the camera controls?

For some reason, they were reversed when the game opened to the public. I might need to change the axis numbers in the ini file but until then, you could just reverse em via the in-game options:

Was there some button or button combination for opening chat / party chat windows ? Or maybe I missed something in changing the .ini? I can use one of the f keys to do it but I have to change the function key setting to do so.

It should be:

Public Chat = View/Back Button while holding RB + RT
Party Chat = Menu/Start Button while holding RB + RT
Public/Party Chat = Guide Button while holding RB + RT

Hmm my buttons are off a little bit. My menu button / start is my guide button. No biggie. Regardless RB+RT + Guide does work out well for switching between the chats.   Thank you Metsume .

Forgot to say before thanks for this set up Midori. Me and my controller thank you.

The Xbox guide button opens the menu in PSU. If you would rather use the Xbox controller menu button instead, you can try editing the controls yourself. You're welcome.

I'd gladly make more advanced changes but it's a bit difficult to understand. Changing buttons changes button combinations.  I wanted to make my left trigger instead of bumper my strafe /lock on button for one. It feels easier to hold down and less likely for my finger to slip off. Among other changes.

Edit: didn't add that I didn't understand the button combo for SUVs until trying buttons and looking through those joystick pages to find it  .   RB+ Guide button.

The Back button doesn't work for cycling through notifications, but it works with other functions such as weapon swapping and opening the chat log.

EDIT: the default key, Z, isn't working for notification cycling either, uh oh

Change your in-game controller setting to keyboard. The Z key doesn't actually cycle through the notifications. You press Z then you can use left and right on the d-pad to cycle through the notifcations.
